The Monarch is one of only a handful of privately owned estates nestled in the natural dunes of the Machangulo Private Reserve, facing the Indian Ocean. It is close enough to civilization to feel safe, but far enough to enjoy true tranquility and peace. WiFi is available but we urge travelers to truly switch off, unplug and enjoy the splendor of nature.
The lodge offers activities like snorkeling, swimming, surfing, and fishing but at other nearby activity centres, you can also enjoy kayaking, kite-surfing and deep-sea fishing. The lodge also has a private game room with various board games, darts and billiards, or you can lounge next to the lodge’s private pool enjoying a drink from the fully stocked bar while enjoying glorious beach views.
A wide range of activities is available at Bemugi’s Place in the quaint village of Santa Maria, close to Loggerhead Lodge. Take a short boat ride to Inhaca Island and spend the day diving, snorkeling or fishing or take a romantic sunset cruise on their 24-foot catamaran. Afterwards, you can enjoy one of the local cocktails or beers at Bemugi’s Bar.
Take a hike through the natural forest surrounding the property and discover a myriad of birdlife, butterflies, small buck and other creatures. On the miles of sandy beaches, you may spot the rarely seen dugong, humpback or southern right whales, dolphins, or even the endangered loggerhead turtle. Private game drives can be arranged where big game like elephant, hippo, giraffe and a range of buck species can be viewed.
From Santa Maria it is a short boat ride to Inhaca Island, an outstanding natural heritage site, where guests can enjoy excellent fishing – specifically from the lighthouse. Here, you can also go snorkeling and explore the famous shipwreck (believed to be the Nova Scotia – a passenger ship that was requisitioned by the Ministry of War Transport, as a troop carrier), or take a walk through the natural forest on the island. For surfing enthusiasts, there is also a good surf spot where you can catch some waves.
